Kolhapuri Chappal

The Story of the Kolhapuri Chappal

In the heart of Maharashtra, where the rhythmic clang of metal and the earthy scent of tanned leather fill the air, lies the town of Kolhapur — the birthplace of a legend that walks even today: the Kolhapuri chappal.

Centuries ago, these sandals were not mere footwear but a mark of royalty and pride. Crafted for kings, warriors, and saints, each pair was a masterpiece — durable, regal, and steeped in cultural grace. The artisans of Kolhapur, using age-old techniques passed down through generations, would cut, stitch, and braid the tough by hand. Their fingers worked with reverence, turning simple leather into timeless works of art.

Every pair told its own story — some adorned with intricate braids and toe loops, others simple and elegant for daily wear. What made them truly special was their durability; a well-made Kolhapuri could last decades, softening and molding perfectly to its wearer’s feet with time.

As the years rolled on, the chappal adapted — just like the people who wore it. From traditional dhotis to denim jeans, the Kolhapuri found its place everywhere, becoming a symbol of versatility and enduring style. Designers reimagined it in modern forms, yet its essence remained untouched — handmade, sustainable, and deeply Indian.

When the Geographical Indication (GI) tag was granted in 2019, it wasn’t just recognition of a craft — it was an ode to generations of artisans who kept this heritage alive against the odds.

Today, every Kolhapuri chappal still carries the echo of its past: the pride of a region, the skill of its makers, and the rhythm of a culture that walks forward while honoring its roots.

In every step, it whispers — I was born royal, but I belong to everyone.
