Blue Pottery

Blue Pottery is a famous traditional craft of Jaipur, originally from Central Asia. It gets its name from the bright cobalt blue color used to decorate it. Some pieces are slightly see-through and often feature animal and bird designs.

Blue pottery came to India in the 14th century through Turkish invasions and grew under the Mughal rulers, who added their own styles and patterns. Unlike most pottery, it doesn't use clay. Instead, it’s made from a mix of quartz powder, glass, borax, gum, and Multani mitti.

The process is delicate and takes many steps. The ingredients are mixed into a soft dough, rolled flat, and shaped in molds. After drying, the pieces are smoothed with sandpaper, hand-painted, glazed, and finally fired in a kiln. This careful method gives blue pottery its unique look and feel.
