HIMROO

Himroo is a luxurious hand-woven fabric that reflects centuries of Indian heritage. It originated in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, and has been woven since the 14th century. The name “Himroo” comes from the Persian word humru (meaning “similar”). It was created to resemble a fabric called Kinkhwab (or Kum-Khwab), which was once woven with real gold and silver threads and worn by royalty. Traditionally, gowns and turbans made from Himroo were reserved exclusively for royal families.

Himroo can be woven using silk, wool, cotton, or zari (gold or silver thread). Traditionally, the base threads were cotton, while the design threads were silk.

How It’s Made: Himroo is handwoven on a loom using a combination of silk and cotton threads. The process produces a thick, richly patterned fabric. Each piece requires two skilled artisans: one operates the loom, while the other works on the intricate design threads (called nakhsha). Unlike mass-produced fabrics, authentic Himroo is never woven on machines, keeping its original beauty and traditional craftsmanship alive..
