Bidri Ware – A Magic in Black and Silver

Bidriware is a unique metal craft from Bidar, a city in Karnataka, India. It began around 500 years ago during the Bahmani Sultanate and has roots in Persian art, but was developed and perfected in India. The name comes from the town of Bidar, where it is still made today.

This craft involves decorating a black metal (a mix of zinc and copper) with silver inlay, creating a beautiful contrast between the shiny silver and the dark background. Sometimes gold is also used. The designs are carved by hand, and the silver is carefully inlaid into them. The black color is created using special soil from the Bidar fort, making the silver designs stand out even more. Bidriware is passed down through generations and received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006, recognizing it as a protected art form unique to Bidar.
